Jang Keun Suk’s First Domestic Fan Meeting
At 11am on March 29, actor Jang Keun Suk’s first fan meeting in Seoul was opened. Although he has previously held fan meetings in Japan, this was his first time hosting one in Korea. The event, ‘Let’s Play with Geun Suk’, was attended by 250 fans, including 31 youth who were invited from orphanages.
During the introduction, Jang told the attendees, “I did research by watching other actors’ fan meetings…I hope we can have a fun time together.” He admitted that his face was puffy because he couldn’t sleep the night before due to anxiety. His fan club presented a cake to congratulate him on his first Korean fan meeting, and the cutting of the cake officially kicked off the event.
One of the activities included a game of chance played with balls of rice that were specially made by Jang Keun Suk. Similar to the game often played on Two Days and One Night (1N2D), some fans had to eat rice balls that were filled with hot mustard inside, while others were more fortunate and got to eat the tasty ones.
There was a question period where Jang answered questions from the attendees. A fan asked why he doesn’t speak about Hong Gil Dong much – implying that he didn’t enjoy the drama project. In response, Jang said: “It’s not that I don’t like it. I just had a hard time shooting Hong Gil Dong. There were many rural filming locations, plus there was a lot to film within a short amount of time. Since I wasn’t cast until the last [minute], I was very busy preparing hastily. Even sleeping two to three hours was considered a lot. It was mentally tiring as well since I was shooting the movie Baby and I at the same time. Compared to the other actors, I had insufficient time to rehearse; however, I received more compliments than expected.”
Jang also addressed his reasons for turning down the part of Gu Jun Pyo in Boys Over Flowers. First of all, he was offered a part in Beethoven Virus; secondly, “it wasn’t the role of Yoon Ji Hu” that was offered”. He further explained: “Each month, I get [proposals for] about 10 drama and movie projects, which my manager hyung reads and studies the scenarios for and then passes them on for me to examine and choose. Although there are times when the projects we choose have negative outcomes, we try our best during the decision making time to choose the best project.”
He shared his future plans and hopes with the fans. “I’m still young, so I also want to challenge myself in other fields,” said Jang. In particular, he is interested in doing a cooking program on television. However, he denies ever thinking about music recording [for a career]. Jang is also interested in pursuing fame abroad, “I’ve been considering not just China, but Taiwan and U.S. as well”. The new management company he works with is actually more focused on activities overseas than in Korea. Hence, they are in discussions for holding some fan meetings abroad this year as well as choosing some international projects. He stated, “I’m currently learning Chinese, Japanese, English, guitar, piano, cooking, vocal training, and more. I want to have an ordinary student life for the time being, and then go abroad for international activities during [the school] break.”
Jang Keun Suk is currently enrolled in Hanyang University’s Theater & Cinema program. He belongs to MGlobal Lobe Entertainment (엠글로벌루브엔터테인먼트), the same agency that represents singers Son Ho Young and Tim.
