The Celebrity Drug Bust – Update IV

Ju Ji Hun

Ju Ji Hun

Actor Ju Ji Hun was sentenced to six months in prison with one year of probation, 120 hours of community service, and a fine of 360,000 won (currently about $280 USD) in an official verdict by the Seoul Central District Court.

At 10am on June 23, Ju Ji Hun appeared in court to receive his sentence for his two-time use of ecstasy and ketamine in March and April of 2008. The three others who were with him at that time – actress Yoon Seol Hee, model Ye Hak Young, and Mr./Ms. Jeon – were given harsher sentences. Yoon was sentenced to three years, while Ye and Jeon received two years and six months with four years of probation and 200 hours of community service. (KP’s note: Ju, Ye, and Jeon received suspended sentences – which means that so long as they don’t breach their probation orders, they will not need to serve their jail time.) All of the sentences were more lenient than those sought at a hearing earlier this month.

Regarding the court’s decision on Ju, it was stated, “When considering the societal evil of the defendant taking ecstasy and ketamine twice, the nature of [his] crime is not light. However, it was taken into consideration for his sentencing that [Ju] had no previous criminal record, he is deeply reflecting [on his mistake], and that [the drugs] were taken one year and two months ago, among other factors.” It was also revealed that the court had received many mercy petitions from fans in Korea and abroad appealing on Ju’s behalf.

KP’s note: Yoon Seol Hee trafficked drugs from Japan a dozen times and Ye dealt – shouldn’t their prison sentences be much harsher than Ju’s?

  1. I feel bad for him, not that I’m justifying drug usage. For only used it twice in the past, he lost so much and the media did him wrong for centering this case around him.
Have you heard any update about the rumor regarding Chunhee?

  2. I don’t get it…so does Ju need to go to jail or not?..at first I thot it meant he had to go to prison for 6months and have a 1yr. probation on top of that..but then the note said that he doesn’t need to do his jail time if he sticks to the rules of the probation..huh?

  3. shilapiglet- he won’t do jail time…if he breaks the rules during the probationary period then he will have to go to jail.

  4. I agree, the dealers (Yoon and Yeh) should’ve gotten a heavier sentence.

  5. Well now we know that no matter how severe the crime is of a celebrity ,all you need are fans sending petitions to put pressure on the judge indorder to lighten the sentencing.

That is such bullcr*p! Soon we’ll be having celebrities who think they can get away with any crimes as long that they have a huge fanbase sending in mercy petitions.

Poor regular korean citizens who’ve also committed the same crimes yet get heavier sentences cause they aren’t celebs.

  6. Kp, thanks for the update.

I’m one happy soul for the favorable outcome today for JJH.
Be it by fans petition, or whatever – all is good.

The violent reactions, criticism, bashing, foul words
that this man is getting is too much, but no bearing anymore.

At this point, the most important thing is he gets the leniency from SK’s Judiciary – that’s what his fans hoped and prayed for.

Indeed, it is VERY GOOD to have a huge support base from his friends, family and fans.

  8. I feel really good for JJH now, too. I think this is a far better outcome than most people were expecting. It sounds like he’s had an outpouring of support from all over the world, which is wonderful. I hope it continues throughout the probation period as well.

  10. All the best for him. Hope that he will kept low-profile and will not made any statement. Netizens and media will twist his words.

From the pic, does he really actually from the court? Looks like he went for modelling instead. The crisp suit. Dang…

  11. Thank you for updating on this story, I was curious to find out what their sentences would be…
On that note, I was wondering what SBS has done after broadcasting the censored picture, which was found to be Lee Chun Hee.
He’s not involved in this matter, right?
If I could get some info on that, I would much appreciate it.

  12. Such a shame. I really like him as a actor. He had such a good future ahead of him. I wonder if him will be given another chance in a few years. I find it hard to imagine his many fans abandoning him due to this error. He is paying the price for his error, hope he can move forward…

  14. Great news, many thanks for this update…..
So glad that the waiting is over, that JJH can see light at the end of the tunnel. Keep a clean life, get the probation/community service and the army time behind you and hopefully by then you can return to the small screen again.

    Aja fighting JJH.

  15. This is such a sad story. Hopefully, he will learn from his mistakes and that his fans and the public will forgive him. I hope to see him in many dramas to come, if not it’ll be such a waste.
